Critical January 2026 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As January 2026 approaches, it's crucial for businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen to stay vigilant about essential tax deadlines. Proper planning now ensures compliance and helps avoid unnecessary penalties.

January 15 – Employer’s Monthly Tax Deposit Deadline

Employers who adhere to the monthly deposit rules must complete their deposits of Social Security, Medicare, and income tax withholdings for December 2025 by January 15. Nonpayroll withholding deposits for December 2025 also fall due on this date if the monthly deposit rule is relevant. Tax deposits must be submitted electronically unless the deposit liability is under $2,500 for the return period, in which case payments can be made quarterly or annually with the return.

January 15 – Farmers and Fishermen

Individuals in farming or fishing industries should use Form 1040-ES to pay their estimated taxes for 2025 by January 15. The deadline to file the 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR) extends to April 15, but if estimated tax isn't paid by January 15, the return and any taxes due must be filed by March 2, 2026, to bypass an estimated tax penalty.

Weekends & Holidays Adjustment

When deadlines coincide with weekends or recognized holidays, the due date extends to the next available business day.

Extensions for Disaster-Affected Areas
